Perry is she is Chicago native who was born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the character. She did not consider a career in acting until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental consequences stress can be a cause of. Perry claimed that she was timid to perform during high school, but started acting in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she starred in her own recurring part on the ABC political thriller Scandal starring her father. She also played in the role of a younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, which is a CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. The character was chosen by auditions, even the fact that she had a deep relationship with the show.
